New Outdoor Net Fundraising
Storrington Cricket Club has been building a junior section and now has over 50 local boys and girls from ages 5 to 14 enjoying the game. In 2019 the Cygnets, as our juniors are known, will play at Under 14, Under 11 and Under 9 levels. We will also be running what is known as the All Stars programme for ages 5 to 8.
Although we already have girls playing in mixed gender teams, we hope to have some all female matches during 2019 in order to build the girls’ section.
We are fortunate in having an adjacent Leisure Centre where indoor coaching and training takes place out of season using a net facility funded by Storrington CC over 10 years ago. However, our outdoor net facilities are very basic and by today’s standards somewhat unsafe.
In order to provide a safe environment for the children to practise and for other users of the recreation ground to be safe from flying cricket balls, we require an enhanced facility, especially in the light of the number of children playing the sport in Storrington.
We therefore plan to have a fully enclosed 2 Lane outdoor Practice Net installed that is 7 metres wide and 30 metres long. The cost will be just under £40,000 and we have raised £27,000 so far, with further fundraising projects in the pipeline. This includes our own Club events as well as applications to external bodies. The installation would be carried out by an ECB accredited supplier and meet with ECB standards. Our aim is to have it ready during the 2019 cricket season.
The Club has had close links with Storrington Primary School for the past few years, through cricket coaching, and the intention is that the school will have free use of the facility.
The Club’s Landlord, the Storrington & Sullington Parish Council, has approved our project, and the site for the Net has been agreed. We have received planning permission from the local authority.
We would seek £500, or the maximum sum available, in order to assist in bridging the final financial gap to getting the nets installed this year.
