Captain’s Report

After struggling to get teams together during the previous season the hard work was done early this season to make sure we had enough players. Persuading players like Dan to come back and keeping Mark Haggart and also persuading people like Johnny Carpenter to commit to more games all helped, as did the introduction of the 3 Livermores and Miles Scerri. Added to our base of committed players we had no problems raising a team.

This was a team that pulled together, on and off the pitch and I would also like to give special thanks to all the people who did the teas, Jim for umpiring each week and Colin for all his hard work on the wicket, along with his helpers. On a personal note, I think the wickets were the best I’ve ever played on in my time at Storrington.

The performance on the pitch was a complete team effort, 8 different players scored 50’s in the League and 8 different players took 4 wickets in an innings. This was backed up with some excellent fielding by the younger members of the team. In several games we didn’t get a wicket in the first 10 overs, but we kept plugging away and never gave up.

In the second half of the season we scored a perfect 240 points, this was incredible and also instrumental in winning the League. We had the highest scoring batsman, bowler with the most wickets and fielder with the most catches in our division. On top of that, of the 110 teams in the West Sussex Invitation League, we finished, performance-wise, 1st out of all 110 teams.

I haven’t mentioned any individuals because we were a team first and foremost. With the excellent work going on with the Cygnets, the new bowling machine, the proposed outdoor nets and the spirit of a successful and enjoyable cricket team on the pitch, the future of Storrington Cricket Club is once again looking rosy.

A special mention also to Colin Harrison for an amazing achievement of 50 years service to the Club. Every club needs people like Colin and he is a special guy as player, scorer and groundsman. He was nominated for the Sussex Oscars and totally deserved his nomination.
